Media Gateway Sales Drive Second Quarter Growth in the IP Telephony Carrier Market
Cisco’s Rebound Fuels Market
Redwood City, Calif. – August 20, 2007 –
According to a newly published report by Dell’Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the networking and telecommunications industries, the worldwide IP telephony carrier market increased sequentially in the second quarter of 2007, due in large part to strong sales of media gateways and, to a lesser extent, sales of voice application servers. Softswitch revenues were down sequentially despite being up over 7 percent when compared to the first quarter of last year.
“The second calendar quarter tends to be seasonally strong mirroring service provider spending patterns,” said Greg Collins, Vice President at Dell’Oro Group. “Compared to the year-ago quarter, the market was up over 10 percent. This strong performance indicates that service providers are continuing to gradually transition their networks to VoIP technology, which is slowly displacing spending on circuit switching technology,” Collins added.
The report also indicates that Cisco’s total IP Telephony Carrier and its media gateway revenues during the second quarter were almost double the prior quarter.
