Despite Lower Budgets, Users Opt for Higher-Priced, Higher-Performance Wireless LAN

802.11n Lifts Overall Wireless LAN Sales for the Next Couple of Years

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – August 10, 2009 – According to a recently published report from Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the networking and telecommunications industries, overall wireless LAN market sales during 2009 are on track to come in approximately 10 percent below 2008. In this market, sales to household users, the largest segment of the WLAN market, are performing better than sales to enterprise users. Dell’Oro Group forecast 2009 sales to household users, the Small Office Home Office (SOHO), to fall 5 percent below 2008 levels to $2.6 billion, while sales to the enterprise segment falls 17 percent to $1.4 billion. Dell’Oro Group also forecast sales to begin rising in 2010 and to continue through 2013, with the largest increases coming from the enterprise segment.

““Macroeconomic conditions are leading consumers to spend more time at home,” said Ben Kwan, Analyst of Wireless LAN research at Dell’Oro Group. “Because consumers are increasingly viewing their internet connections as an inexpensive source of entertainment, they are upgrading their wireless LAN environment to enhance their experience. Despite lower budgets, both household and enterprise users are opting for the higher-priced, higher-performance 802.11n products. This trend will lift overall WLAN revenues for the next couple of years,” added Kwan.

The report delves into factors contributing to the enterprise segment rebound, including the trend to mobility, the impact of replacement sales, and timing of the US government healthcare IT initiative.
